New York sunset

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

There are two observation decks overlooking New York City that provide great views of a potential sunset behind the skyline.

The most famous is the observation deck on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. It has been featured in movies, most memorably in An Affair to Remember, a 1957 film starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, and Sleepless in Seattle, a 1993 romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan that was partly inspired by An Affair to Remember.

Barred Owl

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

I know we have owls in the woods in Central Ohio. I’ve seen stories in the paper about injured owls undergoing rehabilitation in local nature centers. Hikers have told me about owls they’ve watched. And I’ve seen photos by other photographers taken in the same parks I visit.

But after hundreds of miles hiking through the woods I have seen three owls and photographed two.

Capitol at night

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

I remember just about everything from the November 2004 night when I shot this photo of the U.S. Capitol.

Maybe it’s because of the encounter I had with the U.S. Capitol Police (more on that later). But it’s probably because this was the first travel photo I shot with my new, entry-level digital camera after an almost two-decade break from photography.

A collection of sparrows

There are more than 50 types of birds in North America that carry the name “sparrow,” the subject of my featured gallery for February. That’s a lot of different streaky brown birds hanging around.

Of the many varieties of sparrows, 13 spend at least part of the year in Central Ohio where I live. I have photos of 11 of the 13: American Tree Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, House Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow and White-throated Sparrow.
