Blue on green

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

If I’m ever asked to describe the most serene nature scene, my words would attempt to paint a visual image that would look something like this photo.

I find standing at the edge of a wetlands area or beside a lake and watching a Great Blue Heron or Great Egret hunt for food to be extremely relaxing. The bird remains motionless for a long period of time as it watches fish swim nearby. …

Turkey in woods

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

It’s Thanksgiving week, so having a turkey for my photo of the week makes sense.

After all, the turkey is the traditional featured dish in the Thanksgiving meal. According to historians, turkeys were plentiful in eastern North America when the first settlers arrived, making it logical to serve turkey at the 1621 feast between the pilgrims and Native Americans traditionally called the first Thanksgiving.

In the winner’s circle

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

This is a photo of a very successful jockey in the winner’s circle at a track that no longer exists.

The jockey is Edgar Paucar, shown aboard Wise on the Prize after winning a muddy one-mile race in November 2008. The track is Beulah Park, a nice little track in Grove City, Ohio, (a Columbus suburb) that closed in May 2014.

When Beulah was still operating I’d drive down to the track every week or so and take photos of a few races. …

Wild teasel

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

I have to admit that most of my flower or plant photos result from boredom.

I’ll be on a photo hike looking for birds or other wildlife to photograph but having no luck. I’ll grab some shots of flowers or other plants just to shoot something so the trip won’t be a total waste. I’ll be using the super telephoto lens I carry to photograph wildlife so I’ll be at least 20 feet away from the plant. …

Fall colors

Every fall, when the leaves begin changing colors, I think about heading out with my camera to get some photos of the fall colors, the subject of my featured gallery for November.

But one of two things always happens.

One, I get busy on something else and don’t get out until the peak colors have passed. Or two, we get some heavy rains or other weather conditions that minimize the color change or force the leaves to fall early.

I think I’ve only had one trip in the last decade that was dedicated to photographing fall colors. …

Male Grosbeak

It’s Sunday, so it’s time for another photo of the week and the story behind the image.

The male Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a very distinct bird, with its black and white plumage highlighted by a bright rose splotch on the chest.

I don’t encounter Grosbeaks very often on my photo hikes here in Central Ohio, although I know they hang around this area. It may be a case of wrong place, wrong time for me, so maybe the law of averages will kick in and I’ll see a lot of Grosbeaks next summer.
