This photo feels like fall, even though it was taken in late December near the end of the first week of winter. Brown Canada geese flying low over a yellow-brown field has a definite fall look and feel.

I shot this scene when I was making a rare visit to Pickerington Ponds Metro Mark southeast of Columbus, Ohio. It seems to be a nice park, filled with ponds and marshes, but it definitely isn’t photo friendly. The trails are relatively short. The ponds and marshes are away from the trails and out of sight. And the vast majority of the park is a nature preserve that is off limits to visitors.

According to the Franklin County Metro Parks website: "Pickerington Ponds is a premier spot for birdwatching, with more than 260 species seen. The combination of seasonal ponds and rich wetland vegetation, with bordering woodlands, serve as a magnet for migrating waterfowl, shore birds and land birds. Deer, beaver, fox and other wildlife can be seen near the ponds and adjoining woods and fields of this 1,608 acre park.”

That may be true, but I haven’t seen it from the areas I can access.

I might stop by every year or so, just to see if anything has changed. But I have almost 60,000 wildlife photos in my files and only six were taken at Pickerington Ponds. There are too many other parks in the area that are much more photo friendly, so I spend my time elsewhere.

This photo was taken from near the parking lot. I had startled a flock of geese in a marshy area and, as they flew off, I managed to get the camera in position to grab a few shots as the birds flew low over the field.

The only other photo I took during that hike in Pickerington Ponds was a shot of a FedEx cargo jet that had taken off from nearby Rickenbacker International Airport. I guess that’s a sign that I didn’t see much wildlife.

Each week I will post a photo from my collection with an explanation of how I got the shot. Previous photos of the week are in the archives.
